History of Mother Language Day

Did you know that every year on February 21st, the world comes together to celebrate International Mother Language Day? Let's dive into the story behind this special day and see how you can be part of the festivities at SMU!

A Bit of History:

Back in 1952, in what is now Bangladesh, students protested to have their mother tongue, Bengali, recognized as an official language. Tragically, some lost their lives during these protests. To honor their sacrifice and promote linguistic diversity, UNESCO declared February 21st as International Mother Language Day in 1999.

Why It Matters:

Language is more than just words; it's how we share our stories, traditions, and cultures. Celebrating our mother languages helps keep these rich heritages alive and fosters understanding among diverse communities.

Join the Celebration at SMU:

夜色王朝is excited to host its annual International Mother Language Day event on Friday, February 21st, at the Hughes-Trigg Student Center in "The Varsity." Whether you're a native speaker, a language learner, or someone with a heritage language, there's a place for you! Come share your language, learn new phrases, and connect with fellow students through various fun activities.

Let's honor the beauty of our diverse languages and the stories they tell. See you there!
